Top tips for PR professionals starting their careers

Starting a new career – whether you’ve just graduated from university or are having a career change – can be very daunting. You’re entering a whole different world that’s full of new information and new people, and it can be difficult to adjust.

But entering the PR industry is so exciting – it’s an industry full of creativity, variation and fun. Whether you’re starting your career in house or at an agency, specialising in B2B or B2C, read on for some top tips on how to succeed.

Go in with an open mind

One of the best things about working in the PR industry is that no two days are the same. You’ll find yourself developing a multitude of skills, whether it’s press release writing, media relations, crisis communications or internal communications.

Taking this into consideration, it’s best to go into your first role with an open mind and throw yourself into any task that comes your way. Don’t assume that you’ll be spending all your time writing press releases because, as important as this is, it’s just one small part of a career in PR.

The best thing you can do is put yourself forward for any new opportunities and make sure that you get as much experience as possible, soaking up everything like a sponge. This way, you’re not shoehorning yourself into one discipline and will develop a wealth of skills.

Always ask questions (even the ‘silly’ ones!)

When starting a new job in a new industry, you’re going in with a blank slate and the only way you will learn is to ask questions. If you don’t, you’ll just end up feeling confused and might even end up doing things wrong.

There’s the age-old saying that ‘no question is a silly question’ and this is so true when starting a career in PR. You can guarantee that the question you feel scared to ask has been asked hundreds of times before, and there might even be someone else in your office with the same question! Never be afraid to ask – you might feel annoying, but people certainly won’t find you annoying.

Develop your network

Relationships are so important in the PR industry, for both winning new work and delivering success for your clients. For example, having a good relationship with journalists is key when it comes to securing coverage for your clients and having a good relationship with local businesspeople will increase the chances of them coming to you for help.

You can grow your network by making sure you’re active on LinkedIn, connecting with new people and posting regularly about the amazing work you’ve done. Also, put yourself forward for any networking events or speaking opportunities – these are great ways to increase your profile and meet new people.

So, by taking every opportuning, asking all the questions and creating a great network, you’ll be on your way to a great PR career. And above all else, be yourself and always give 100% – it’s a sure way to succeed.
