Insights into the Mental Health Landscape in the PR and Communications Industry
The 2024 PRCA MENA Mental Health Report reveals a nuanced but overall positive trend in mental health awareness and support within the public relations industry in the MENA region. Building on data from 2021, the report sheds light on critical advancements, persistent challenges, and actionable steps for fostering well-being in our workplaces.
Key findings:
- Increased Awareness: Mental health challenges are more openly acknowledged, with 30% of respondents reporting such experiences in 2024, compared to just 10% in 2021.
Widespread Recognition: An overwhelming 96% of respondents view mental health as essential to their quality of life. - Workplace Impact: 88% of professionals reported a “strong” or “moderate” influence of their workplace on their mental well-being.
- Improved Employer Support: 71% feel “completely” or “moderately” supported by their employer, up from 42% in 2021.
- Enhanced Initiatives: 65% believe their organisations are doing enough—or more than enough—to support mental health, compared to 44% previously.
The Path Ahead
While progress is undeniable, challenges remain:
- A gap persists between awareness and actionable steps, with many still relying on self-help or informal networks rather than professional support.
- Larger organisations and senior leadership engagement in mental health initiatives lag behind, leading to inconsistent support across companies.
- 15% of employees feel their workplace does not provide adequate mental health measures, signaling room for further improvement.
