This Saraha Series event is being held in partnership between the Arab International Women’s Forum, a development organisation based in London that advocates for economic inclusion for women and young people in the MENA, and Taa Marbouta, a women-in-PR empowerment movement that introduced the first open to all, women-to-women mentorship programme in the MENA region, co-owned by founding partners PRCA MENA (the world’s largest Public Relations Association) and GWPR (Global Women in PR), with global integrated communications network Ogilvy as a founding and creative partner.

Women make up two-thirds of the workforce in the public relations industry, but more than half of all senior positions and management roles are taken up by men. The low representation of women is not just a MENA challenge but a universal issue in the media, PR, communications and creative industries. Therefore, from the regional perspective, this unique 3-part session will discuss:

  • Strategies to improve representation of women in a variety of media, from journalism to television to literature, in PR, advertising, communications and related creative industries in the region;
  • How to use increased representation to mainstream more positive, balanced, and fair coverage of women’s successes to inspire narrative change;
  • How language, specifically grammatical gendered language, drives inequality and biases, used across all platforms
  • What a more gender-balanced media industry of the future might look like; and
  • How educators are preparing the next generation of women for the creative economy.
